Skull and Roses Tattoo by Tamas Dikac
Skulls in tattoos can represent our own mortality or “momento mori” Latin for “remember your mortality”.
Roses are often tattooed with skulls to show the contrast between life and death or beauty and decay.
This design also has the butterfly for life and beauty and the cross for mortality.

This memorial tattoo by Tamas Dikac honours the clients grandfathers. The image includes Sunflowers and Roses as each grandfather was a keen grower and each cultivated competition winning examples. It was Tamas’s idea to include the womans face, an angel.

Day of the Dead Girl Tattoo by Matt Curtis
Ryan; “I really wanted a Sugar Skull tattoo but then my sister mentioned the Sugar Skull Girl. I looked for a couple of months until I found a design that I liked. I showed it to Matt Curtis who completely redesigned it. It doesn’t represent anything I just felt it was a really powerful image”
Within the Western culture, skulls usually depict the dark, macabre and gruesome death. The sugar skulls’ origin (or calaveras de azucar) springs from Mexico. Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is a Mexican holiday, celebrated on the 1st and 2nd November in connection with the Catholic holidays of All Saint’s Day and All Hollow’s Day. Sugar skulls are made from clay moulded sugar and decorated with feathers coloured beads, foils and icing are often used to decorate the gravestones of the deceased. The symbolism of a sugar skull is rooted in the decoration around the eyes. Flowers are meant to symbolize life, while cob webs symbolize death. Burning candles set inside the eyes are a sign of remembrance.

Fiona’s In Memory tattoo by Max Hewat
“I came all the way from Orkney to get tattooed.
This tattoo is in memory of my brother. The Ram horns are for his star sign Aries and the heart is for him.
This was a bit spur of the moment as I was coming to get another tattoo done but that needed more time.”
Thistle Tattoo by Matt Curtis
We have done a lot of Thistle tattoos at Tribal Body Art over the years, usually requested by patriotic Scots or tourists (mostly Americans) with some sort of Scottish connection.
A lot of them have been the same generic “Scottish Thistle” but Sean wanted something more unique.
As a Scot living in Wales Sean wanted this pen and ink style Thistle to remind him of the old country so Matt Curtis applied his painterly skills and this Thistle tattoo is the result.
